The wave is not a genre
First thing to get straight. The wave is not a sound you can chart on a graph. It is not a subgenre with a BPM range and a drum pattern.
The wave is a posture. A way of moving through a room. Unbothered, unhurried, above whatever is happening at ground level. If you are wavy, nothing touches you. That is the whole idea.
The music is downstream of that. Max B built a catalog where the singing and the rapping stopped being separate things, where hooks came from somewhere off the top rather than off a page, and where the emotional register sat closer to soul music than to what New York rap sounded like in 2007. That sound came out of the posture, not the other way around.
Where the name Wave God comes from
Max B is Charley Wingate, from the Abraham Lincoln Houses in Harlem, born May 21, 1978.
He came home from an eight year sentence in 2005 and started rapping immediately, taking the name Max Biggavelli. The B is short for Biggavelli, which is three names welded together: Biggie, Jigga and Makaveli.
Then came the other names. Silver Surfer. Wavy Crockett. Don Biggavel. And eventually Wave God.
Wave God is not a nickname somebody in marketing handed him. It is what people started calling him because he made the thing. If wavy is the water, he is the one who put it there.
Wavy went everywhere
The word left him almost immediately and never came back.
"Wavy" is now standard vocabulary in hip hop, in fashion, and in youth culture generally, used constantly by people who have never heard a Max B record. That happens with maybe a handful of words per generation.
The clearest public marker came in 2016. Kanye West planned to title an album Waves. Wiz Khalifa objected publicly on the grounds that the wave was Max B's, and it turned into one of the loudest arguments of that year. Max B, who was incarcerated at the time, called in to The Breakfast Club about it and said, "It's all love. I appreciate it."
That same album ended up including "Siiiiiiiiilver Surffffeeeeer Intermission," a phone conversation between Max B and French Montana.

Coke Wave and the Wave Gods
The wave became a body of work through French Montana.
They connected in 2008, both on the outside of the ByrdGang situation. First song together was "Waavvyy," off French's Live From Africa. The name of the first record they ever made tells you what they knew they had.
Coke Wave dropped February 5, 2009. Coke Wave 2 followed that November. Then Wave Gods in 2016. Then the reunion: Coke Wave 3.5: Narcos in January 2026, Wave Gods 2: Cosmos Brothers in May, and Night To Remember on September 4.

Why the wave outlived the absence
Here is the part that is genuinely unusual.
Max B went away in June 2009. Nothing new came out. No tours, no videos, no participation in the culture at all for sixteen years.
The wave grew the entire time.
The style he was making, melodic rap out of a Harlem mixtape scene, became the dominant sound of a generation. Artists who were teenagers when Public Domain 3 came out built careers on it. Drake referenced him on "Money in the Grave." Wiz Khalifa put a "Max B Interlude" on Kush + Orange Juice 2 in 2025 and brought him onto Khaotic in 2026. Jay Critch made a song called "Still Wavy."
